The Funny Little Woman retold by Arlene Mozel pictures by Blair Lent

One day one of the funny little woman's dumplings rolls down a hole. The funny little woman follows the dumpling and ends up in a strange place underground lined with Jizo (guardian statues). The Jizo warn her not to go after the dumpling because of wicked oni (monsters) who live there, but she does anyway. An oni grabs the woman and takes her in a boat across a river to the house of the oni. What will she do? How will she get home?

How these stories are connected: The oni and the devil are mean characters who want the woman and Jesus to do things they don’t want to do. Keeping sight of good humor and being kind can help us resist the urge to do things we shouldn’t.
