How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long, Illustrated by David Shannon

A young boy is given a chance to become a pirate when they need help burying their treasure. What begins as a great adventure quickly turns sour when the boy discovers that the comforts of his home and family life are missing aboard the ship.

How these stories are connected: The Pirates call Jeremy Jacob to join them, just as Jesus calls his disciples to follow him. In the end, it matters who we follow, because we become like the one(s) we follow.

Questions about How I Became a Pirate:

Why did the pirates want Jeremy to be part of their crew?

What happened on the ship that Jeremy liked?

Why didn't he want to be a pirate? Why did he go home?

Questions about the Bible story:

How did Jesus call his disciples?

Why do you think they followed him?

What do you think Jesus wanted them to do?

Do you think Jesus changed them or they changed Jesus?

Questions about our lives:

What do you really like to do?

Who likes to be with you when you are doing those things?

How our friends and the things we like to do help us learn to follow Jesus?

Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank you for asking us to follow you. Thank you for the people around us. Help us to follow you together. Amen.

Mousekin's Mystery by Edna Miller

After his home is burned by lightning during a summer storm, Mousekin is frightened by a strange pale light in the dark forest which he eventually learns to be foxfire, a glow caused by fungi in decaying wood.

How these stories are connected: The glowing mushroom feeders helped Mousekin both escape from the owl and overcome his fears. Jesus comes to help people who need him. How does he do that?

Questions about Mousekin's Mystery:

What happened that forced Mouskin out into the woods?

What was Mousekin scared of in the woods?

How was Mousekin saved from the owl?

What did Mousekin realize at the end of the story?

Questions about the Bible story:

What happened when Jesus told Simon and Andrew to throw out their nets again?

What did Jesus ask Simon and Andrew to catch instead of fish?

How many disciples had Jesus “fished” by the end of the story?

Questions about our lives:

What kind of leader do you like to follow?

What are some ways Jesus has helped or led you?

What makes you a follower of Jesus?

Prayer

Dear God, help us to accept your guidance when we are feeling lost or confused and don’t know what to do. Thank you for your comfort when we are scared. Amen.
