2 Samuel 18: 5-9, 15, 31 - 33 The death of King David's son Absalom
We never get over it

David never got over the death of his son Absalom. Perhaps we can be more compassionate towards our leaders, who suffer losses and hold votives for their lost loved ones. We are joined with them in our humanity, because we never get over the deaths of those we love either, and we hold votives for them in our hearts and souls as long as we live. Here is the corrected quote from Dietrich Bonhoeffer referenced in this sermon: "We must learn to regard people less in the light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer."
