I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I origianlly studied and trained to be an electrical engineer, and served the City of Los Angeles for 10 years in that capacity.
I was married and divorced at an early age. Broken and hopeless, a friend referred me to a world-wide retreat movement called Walk to Emmaus, where I heard loudly and clearly that God is interested in me, and all of us.
I began to work as a servant on those retreat weekends, finding deep, real community and a joy I never knew was possible. That community led me to work on other retreats, for young people in prison. Scared beyond belief, I went because my deep, real, joyful community said I would be OK. I was.
I thrived, finding that my own brokenness and healing were inspirational to others.
That experience eventually led me to seminary at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. Everyone deserves that experience. What a fabulous time of study, introspection, transformation, and absolute mind-blowing, in the best possible way. (It was so great, I went back as soon as I could and got a doctorate in preaching.)
I met Phil in seminary and we married within a year. We have three grown children: iea (married to Sarah), Matthew and Paul, and many others we consider our children. (You know who you are.)
I have been hurt deeply by religious people in many, many ways, and have a heart for those who seek deep, real, joyful community and the grace of God within the church. I'm here to tell you both are possible.
