What is The Way of Christ?

The Way of Christ is a Christian movement dedicated to renewing faith and congregational life. It consists of three components: weekend experiences, ongoing small group gatherings, and periodic community gatherings called ForWords.   The Way of Christ finds its roots in the Spanish Roman Catholic Cursillo (Kur- SEE-yo), a movement started in Majorica in the late 1940’s. The movement came to the United States in the 1950’s, then to Canada through the Anglican church. The Roman Catholic Cursillo movement has grown, spread, and been adapted throughout the world to include Anglicans, Presbyterians, Methodists, Lutherans and many other denominations, as well as people who are incarcerated and their families.   The Way of Christ is a fully inclusive, affirming, and welcoming Lutheran expression of this nearly three-quarters-of-a-century-old tradition.

What is the Purpose of The Way of Christ?

The Way of Christ is a spiritual renewal program designed to assist people in their daily walk with Christ and strengthen congregational life. Although the weekend and the movement are designed for Christians, The Way of Christ is welcoming and also has a transformative effect on people outside or on the fringes of the Christian tradition who seek spiritual renewal.

What Happens on a Weekend?

Participants listen to talks about setting priorities, leadership, prayer, study, service, giving, and God's grace. They hold small group discussions after each talk. They also sing, pray, worship, and share meals together. The atmosphere of The Way of Christ weekend is welcoming, gentle, inclusive and joyful. It is an opportunity for people to develop a closer relationship to God in a personal and unique way.

What Happens after The Way of Christ Weekend?

Participants are encouraged to expand their spiritual lives through study, church participation, and natural active witness to the power of God's love in daily life. Ongoing opportunities for sharing and growth are also provided through small groups meeting regularly for study, prayer, and support. Periodic gatherings of the local Way of Christ community called ForWords offer encouragement, inspiration, worship, fellowship and sharing.

Who Attends?

The Way of Christ is designed for ordinary people aged 18 and older from every walk of life, as well as pastors. It is for people who live strong and active lives in Christ, as well as those who seek to be renewed and strengthened in their faith lives. Baptism and church membership are not required, although the sacraments of the church are a topic of conversation and practice on the weekend. The Way of Christ is an inclusive ministry, meaning all people are welcome.
